Digitisation of Church of Ireland records

I was over in the Representative Church Body Library* last week in Churchtown. This is the main library for the Anglican church in Ireland and it’s where we go to look at original Church of Ireland parish records for the 26 counties in the Republic. Surviving digitised records for Dublin are online at Irishgenealogy.ie and some other county transcriptions are available online in a couple of places like Rootsireland.ie but this is where you see the originals. Quite some time ago, it was announced with huge fanfare that they had secured state funding to digitise all their parish registers. Claire Santry reported that the project had run into delays caused by Covid in 2023, so I asked for an update. Here’s what I found out. They now have almost all parishes scanned but not transcribed. Cork is still not done. They have them on two computers in the reading room, which may make for faster checking. They’re on an internal website. I asked about making them available online and it seems there isn’t a plan for now. They intend to use Transkribus to transcribe the records but there is no timeframe for release at the moment.

*Their website now requires a human check so the url appears broken when I try to link it but if you search “RCB library”, you’ll find it very easily.

  1. I hope they are not going to renege on their promise to put the parish registers on irishgenealogy.ie.

Also I have noticed that their hand list shows many parishes in the Republic of Ireland are still held in local custody so probably have not been scanned yet. i.e. Half of County Monaghan, Dundalk etc. I wonder if these parishes will ever be scanned and put online and whether the Northern Ireland parishes will ever be included.

    1. They will presumably only be scanning those in their custody already, so I expect the ones you mention won’t be scanned. Northern Ireland will definitely not be included as this funding comes fron the ROI government and the RCB has no control over the northern parish records (in PRONI).
