Friday 20th September is Culture Night!
Culture Night started in 2006 in Dublin but has since grown to a nationwide and international event. The idea is that museums, galleries and other buildings open for the evening and let people visit, often for free. There’s always a great buzz in the city on the evening. Check their website to see what might be of interest.
In another life, I actually ran a Dublin culture blog with a friend. We reviewed events and exhibitions. One particular year, I did 17 separate things on Culture Night, taking a half-day from my then job to get a headstart on the evening. Guess what I did the next day? I sat down for all of it, totally wiped! At this stage, you could pretty much say I’ve done it all, except for temporary exhibitions!
As genealogy became more of my focus, I did a year where I worked on the Genealogy Advisory Service in the National Library of Ireland and helped a long queue of people. I used Culture Night one year to get a free visit to EPIC – the quite expensive emigration museum. In 2021, I had the opportunity to see the inside of Fitzwilliam Square – usually only for the residents.
This year, I’m doing something similar in Fingal Archives. I’ll be there from 6pm to answer genealogy questions & offer advice. Come in, see what the archives is all about and have a chat if you’re local. It’s free & you don’t need to book.
